"What do you want for dinner?" Four words. Complete system crash. Here's why food decisions are so hard for ADHD brains — and what actually helps.
It's 6pm. You haven't eaten properly since breakfast. You're standing in front of an open fridge, staring at ingredients that theoretically make a meal, and your brain has gone completely blank. You close the fridge. You open it again. Nothing has changed. Thirty minutes later you've ordered UberEats for the third time this week and you feel vaguely guilty about it.
This isn't a willpower problem. It's a decision fatigue problem — and for ADHD brains, it hits harder and earlier than for most people.
Why food decisions cost so much
Every decision you make draws on the same executive function resources — the part of the brain that plans, weighs options, and initiates action. ADHD already means that resource runs at a deficit. By the time evening rolls around, after a full day of managing everything else, the tank is often empty.
"What do you want for dinner?" is not a simple question. It's actually a chain of smaller questions: What do we have? What can I make from that? How long will it take? Does anyone in the house not eat that? Is there enough? Do I need to defrost anything? Each question costs a tiny amount of executive function. String enough of them together and the brain stalls entirely.
Grocery shops are worse. Walking into a supermarket when your decision-making is depleted is a sensory and cognitive overload situation. Too many options, too many aisles, too many micro-decisions. The ADHD brain often responds by either buying whatever catches its eye (impulse overspend) or leaving with half the things it needed (and forgetting why it went).
The ADHD tax version of food
The financial cost is real. Food that goes off because it wasn't used. Takeaway because planning failed. The premium of buying ingredients for a recipe and then lacking the bandwidth to cook it. Duplicates because you couldn't remember what was already in the cupboard. These things add up — and the guilt of "wasting money on food again" adds its own weight.
This is part of the broader ADHD tax: not a character flaw, but a real and measurable cost of running a brain that burns through executive function faster than the system was designed for.
What actually reduces the load
Default meal rotation, not meal planning. Forget planning a different dinner every night of the week. Pick 5 to 7 meals your household actually eats, and rotate through them. No creativity required. No decisions. Tuesday is pasta. Thursday is something with eggs. The decision was made once and now it's done. When you're tired, you don't decide — you just look up what day it is.
Lower the bar for what counts as dinner. A bowl of cereal, a plate of cheese and crackers, a fried egg on toast — these are dinner. The ADHD brain often gets stuck in an all-or-nothing trap where dinner either has to be a Proper Meal or it's a failure. Letting go of that saves a lot of cognitive and emotional energy.
Shop from a fixed list, not a fresh decision. Build a list of the 20 or so things your household goes through regularly and keep it as a standing order or template. Reordering the same list every week requires almost no executive function. Starting from scratch every time costs a lot.
Batch when your brain is online, not when it's depleted. If there's a time of week when you have slightly more capacity — Sunday morning, Saturday afternoon — that's when to prep. Not because you have to, but because cooking when your brain is available is fundamentally easier than cooking when it's running on fumes. Even chopping vegetables in advance removes one barrier later.
The part nobody says
A lot of ADHD adults feel genuine shame around food — the takeaway habit, the forgotten groceries, the meals that never got cooked. It feels like evidence of being bad at adulting. It's not. It's evidence of an executive function system under load doing the best it can with what it has.
Reducing the load is the goal, not pushing harder. The brain you have is the brain you have. The question is how to build an environment that works with it.
